Gang storms Owerri court, kills 6, frees robbery suspect
Members of a kidnap gang yesterday stormed an Owerri High Court in Imo State and set free a notorious kidnapper and armed robber, Henry Chibueze, aka ‘Vampire’, who had been in prison and was facing trial at the court.
The armed gang arrived the court premises in the morning in a jeep and waited for the arrival of the prison vehicle conveying some prisoners to the High Court for trial.
As soon as they arrived and “Vampire” stepped out of the vehicle, his colleagues, who were already well positioned, opened fire on the prison escorts.
After the shooting, which lasted for about 10 minutes, a prison warder and 5 others yet to be identified were found dead. Several others were injured while trying to escape.
Henry Chibueze or “Vampire”, was on July 26, 2015 paraded before newsmen at the DSS office in Owerri in the presence of the state Governor Rochas Okorocha.
Imo State Prison Command spokesman, James Madugba, who spoke to newsmen at the scene, however said no one was killed during the shooting. He said the command was earlier alerted on the presence of some unidentified persons who they suspected to be members of the DSS.
