News broke on Monday, February 13, regarding a call to be put through to President Muhammadu Buhari, by President Donald Trump of the United states.
The news generated so much buzz, and it is definitely not far fetched why such a call will stir controversy in Nigeria, especially at a time such as this.
An Absent President
For what seem now as "too long", the Nigerian President has been away, Monday, makes it the 25th day of his not being on seat.
It started of as a vacation on Thursday, January 19, and before the supposed 10-day vacation ended, the president sent a note to the Senate requesting for an extension.
The request stirred an uproar, as Nigerians could not comprehend, why their leader would be away for so long a time, especially at this moment when the nation is on the verge of its worst economic crisis.
Protests, Photos and a leader battling for life
The nation was recently rocked by protest carried out by its citizens for the government and against governance that is having a negative effect on the Nigerian people.
People filled the streets carrying various placards, some saying #IStandWithBuhari, while others where in protest, stressing that this is not the change they voted for.
The entire protests took place amid rumours that the Nigerian president is mortally ill, some going all the way to claim that the president must be dead, especially because as the these went bye, all the people could see where photos of those who allegedly went to see the Nigerian leader in London.
Nigerians took to various social-medial platforms, urging the president to speak to the people, for some, a video call would be the only way to affirm that he is still alive.
This push for a call came even amid claims by both The Senate President - Bukola Saraki and leader of the House of Reps - Yakubu Dogara, that they have both spoken to the leader, who at this time reports suggested strongly was really ill, with many calls being made for prayers to aid his quick recovery.
The unexpected call and an expectant people
In the evening of Monday, February 13, President Muhammadu Buhari congratulated Donald Trump on his successful emergence as president of the US in their telephone conversation.
The two presidents spoke after it was announced that Trump would speak with Buhari in London at 3:45pm with another call to President Jacob Zuma of South Africa.
In a statement by Femi Adesina who is the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, he said Trump commended Buhari in the success recorded in the fight against Boko Haram and promised better collaboration between the two countries.
He also said the US will continue to support Nigeria in the fight against terrorism by providing military weapons.
The two leaders discussed ways to improve cooperation in the fight against terrorism through provision of necessary equipment.
Following reports of the call, Nigerians have aired their views, some stressing that the call is not total proof that the president is alive or hail and hearty. While others are of the opinion that the call affirms the fact that the president is indeed a respected man in the comity of Nations.
