                             Two people reportedly died when they were struck by lightning in Pogo Community, Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State on Friday evening while another individual was reportedly injured in the same incident. Twenty-five year-old Aliyu Salihu and a 13-year-old student of an islamic school whose name was simply given as Abbas died instantly when thunder struck during a light rain shower at about 8pm, while one Abdullahi sustained injuries. Aliyu’s father, Malam Salihu Makeri, who confirmed his son's death said that the victims were harvesting mangoes when lightning suddenly enveloped the community with the accompanying thunder. “It was like electric sparks, followed by a heavy thunderstorm which shook the entire community. People were screaming in front of my house and when I rushed out, I saw three figures lying under the mangoe tree,”  he explained.   ...

Troops on patrol have arrested a herdsman with a locally made bullet proof and cutlass at Chegba village in Logo Local Government Area of Benue.   A statement signed by Col. Aliyu Yusuf on Sunday said the suspect has been handed over to the police. Yusuf also said troops, during the patrol, intervened in a violent clash between hunters and herdsmen in Obi Local Government following a distress call.                             In related development, Yusuf said troops on patrol named Ayem Akpatuma, Cat Race, also seized a locally made pistol with one live cartridge at Gidan Kiya village, Ibbi Local Government Area of Taraba.   He called on the residents of the areas where the exercise took place to continue to cooperate with the troops by providing useful information and to report any suspicious movement to security agencies. A father has been charged with repeatedly raping his twin daughters and starving them in an ordeal that lasted for at least 10 years. Jerry Lee Curry, 51, is accused of chaining his daughters up for 10 years, starving and beating them at their home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, US. The father tortured the girls for years, tied them down with chains and gave them very little to eat. As a result of the long stretches of captivity, one of the daughters suffered gangrene and needed surgery to save her feet. One of the victims suffered a "largely detached" left ear and she was found to have scars on her forehead, scalp and back. She said that her father had beat her with a bat and a paddle.
